PJ Hughes

PJPJ grew up in Chicago and went to college in Dubuque Iowa receiving a degree in Sociology. It was in the early 1980’s that PJ’s best friend and training partner (a Vietnam era U.S. Navy SEAL) began to teach PJ about PTS (Post Traumatic Stress) and the effects that war can have on the mind and soul of a combat warrior. He saw first hand what it could do to issues of faith. It was then that PJ decided to do something to help his friend with the issues of faith war can cause.

In 1998 PJ’s family began volunteering at Joni and Friends Family Retreats. He was reluctant at first, but soon helping others became close to PJ’s heart. In 2008 Joni and Friends began the Wounded Warrior Getaway in San Antonio, Texas for those at SAMMC (San Antonio Military Medical Center). Since then he has donated his time and energy to the Warrior cause. For the last 10 years PJ has been actively involved in over 20 Warrior Getaways serving as a facilitator with the Warriors. In addition he began Walking Wounded – a local outreach to Warriors and first responders.
